Meet Sir Nils, The Penguin holding the impressive rank of Major General in the Norwegian Army. Making him the World highest ranking Penguin.
The Norwegian King’s Guard has promoted Sir Nils Olav III, a king penguin residing at Scotland’s Edinburgh Zoo, to the Position of Major General. This promotion has granted Nils the distinction of holding the Third Highest rank within the Norwegian Army.
The Norwegian King’s Guard has designated the widely acclaimed king penguin as its mascot and colonel in chief. The Edinburgh Zoo has posted photos of the ceremony on X- formerly Twitter. Showcasing the presence of over 160 Uniformed soldiers from His Majesty the King of Norway’s Guard.

A special ceremony honored Sir Nils with new badge of honor at Penguins Rock. The location of the wildlife conservation charity. The majestic black, white and yellow penguin has held the role of mascot for His Majesty the King if Norway’s Guard since as far back 1972. The name “Nils Olav” and the associated ranks have been passed down through three king penguins over the year, with the current holder being Nils Olav III.
The Edinburgh Zoo christened a king penguin with the names of two people. Major Nils Egelien, who arranged his adoption by the zoo in 1972, and the King of Norway, King Olav. The Guardsmen pay visits to Sir Nils at the zoo every few years while performing at The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in the City. During these visits, they confer a promotion upon him, as stated in a blog by the Edinburg Zoo.
Since adopted in 1972, he has steadily climbed the ranks. He started as the Mascot and was later promoted to Corporal in 1982. Then Sergeant in 1987, Regimental Sergeant Major in 1993 and Honorable Regimental Sergeant Major in 2001.In 2005 he was promoted to Colonel-in-Chief. In 2008 he was rank to Knighthood, Brigadier Sir in 2016 and now Major General in 2023.
