On Monday, the leader of Seychelles’ primary opposition party, Patrick Herminie found himself facing charges related to an investigation into alleged witchcraft. Herminie, who also plans to contest in the 2025 presidential election. Vehemently denied these charges, describing them as politically motivated.

This development occurred after authorities arrested Herminie at his party’s headquarters last Friday. Conducting a thorough search before he was subsequently released. On Monday, he was formally charged at the Seychelles magistrates’ court, alongside seven other individuals. In connection with an inquiry into “witchcraft” and “unnatural and superstitious” activities.

In response to his arrest, Herminie stated, “This is a political show by the president, Wavel Ramkalawan, to eliminate those who he knows will remove him from power in the 2025 elections,” as reported by the Seychelles News Agency.

Prosecutors revealed that Herminie’s name had surfaced in a WhatsApp conversation with a Tanzanian man who was detained in September. This individual was allegedly found in possession of items associated with witchcraft, such as black wooden artifacts, small bottles containing a brownish liquid, and documents featuring language and symbols described as satanic.

The case intertwines with an investigation that originated from the discovery of two exhumed bodies—an elderly woman and a young man—in a cemetery on the main island of Mahe in August. Prosecutors further asserted that the symbols on the documents seized from the Tanzanian suspect closely resembled those discovered at vandalized locations in Seychelles, including Catholic churches.

During the court proceedings, Herminie and the other Seychellois defendants were released on bail, each requiring a sum of 30,000 Seychelles rupees (approximately $2,200). In contrast, the Tanzanian suspect was ordered to remain in police custody. A subsequent hearing in the case is scheduled for November 3.
